Your Must-Do Fall Landscaping Checklist

October 6, 2021

If you’re a lover of gardening or just enjoy having a nice yard, fall is probably one of your favorite times of year. The temperature is crisp and cool enough to sit outside, colorful leaves on the trees shroud your lawn in beauty, and who can forget about fall vegetable harvests? Here are the things you need to do this fall to maintain a gorgeous lawn:

Test Your Soil

All experienced gardeners know that healthy soil is the key to strong plants and a picturesque yard. Test your soil now to ensure your pH and nutrient levels are up to snuff. This way, if you have any issues, then you have plenty of time to correct them before spring.

Pamper Your Grass

Fall is generally the best time to aerate and reseed your lawn, which might have dried out during the summer. Also, you’ll want to give your grass a final mow for the year, and trim it as short as possible to minimize the risk of disease and damage from pests.

Prepare Your Perennials

Unfortunately, many of your plants won’t make it through the winter, no matter what you do. However, cutting the stems of your perennials so that they’re about an inch off the ground can help ensure their survival until the spring. Spread mulch as well to keep any pesky animals away.

Aerate Your Lawn

Though aeration is a hefty investment, it can break up compacted soil, allow water to reach your roots much more quickly, and deliver necessary nutrients throughout your lawn.

"We got a chance to visit many communities and look at homes and home plans from many builders. From the big national chain builders to smaller local guys, no one seemed to be able to offer the quality of home at the price that Ole South could. A unique home that fit our needs and was customized to our desires. With a no pressure sales process, it was a unique experience that we were surprised to see and one of the reasons we live happily in our Ole South home today. "
