Vinyl or Hardwood Flooring?

October 19, 2022

Choosing the best flooring for your home can be overwhelming, with so many options to choose from it can be difficult to narrow down what’s going to best suit your lifestyle. Vinyl flooring and hardwood floors are often two of the top flooring choices, but have you ever wondered what is the difference between the two?

Material

While vinyl flooring often looks like real wood, it’s actually plastic, making it a more affordable option than hardwood. On the other hand, hardwood flooring varies between types of real wood, from oak to maple to cherry woods, there are lots of options to choose between when it comes to hardwood.

Maintenance

While vinyl flooring is low maintenance and extremely easy to clean, it can show fading with excessive UV exposure over time. If you do decide on vinyl flooring, make sure to periodically close curtains or blinds to avoid this damage. This type of flooring choice is also susceptible to being punctured by sharp objects and dented by heavy furniture. However, vinyl flooring is a nice option for homeowners with children, as this flooring is resistant to moisture. Any spills that happen can be wiped up without fear of causing damage.

On the other hand, hardwood floors do require more maintenance than vinyl flooring and need to be refinished every couple of years. They do tend to hold their value much longer and will increase the worth of your home. While hardwood floors are typically more durable, they do not resist moisture and can easily become damaged when spills or leaks are not addressed.

Installation

Vinyl flooring is typically easy to install on your own, however, if the flooring is glued down it can be very difficult to remove.

On the contrary, installing hardwood flooring is typically done by a professional with expertise and experience. Removing this flooring is considered difficult and should also be done by an expert.

Weigh Your Options

Whether you decide to utilize vinyl or hardwood flooring, be sure to consider the pros and cons of each option, making sure to carefully choose the best one for your home and lifestyle.

"Choosing Ole South for our family was the best choice we could have made for our first home. The agents that represent Ole South have a great knowledge about the product and always made us feel welcomed every time we came to look at "our" home. Definitely customer service had a huge impact on our decision and as well as the great quality our home possesses. The day of closing the Vice President came to our home, as well as the Ole South agent and the project manager, just to say thank you for choosing Ole South. It made us feel as though we made the right decision that day and after three years don't ever regret choosing an Ole South home."
