12 Holiday Decorating Tips

With the holidays upon us and more and more of our neighbors and friends showing their perfect pictures of their perfect holiday decorations around their house, we know the pressure to raise to the occasion can be daunting. So we’ve decided to deliver a holiday miracle and give you 12 festive decorating tips for your home!

1: Put a twist on your traditional wreath. Instead of using a traditional evergreen wreath, try to make a homemade wreath with citrus fruits! Start with a circular piece of florist’s foam, use a wooden florist’s picks to secure large items (such as oranges), continue with smaller fruit (clementines, limes, etc.), and tie a thick velvet ribbon to it. You can still have traditional pieces in your house, but with a modern spin!

2. Bring the greenery inside – besides the tree! Having lush greenery draping around the house can bring the holiday feels! Drape it across the fireplace mantle, or wraps the stair rail with it. Having the draping greenery around your home creates an inviting atmosphere and brings a woodsy – cozy aroma.

3. Illuminate everything! Light up every room with twinkling topiaries! There are so many ways you can use the twinkle lights – and not just on the tree. Wrap them with the greenery from above, fill up a tall cylinder with a pile of them, line your fireplace with a strand, or add them to planters you have in and out of the house. Have the soft, warm glow of the twinkle lights will bring a cozy holiday feel to your home.

4. Make your place settings creative! Add a small ornament to the napkin holder to bring a little festiveness to your table. You can also buy clear glass orbs and fill them yourself with greenery, glittery garland, pine needles, or any special trinket you want. You can also make each on personal for the person sitting at that setting.

5. Wish-filled wreath! Another great wreath idea is to hang an unadorned twig wreath in a spot in your home where guests won’t miss it. Put out little plain cards and some red markers next to where you hang the wreath. Ask your visitors to write down a wish they have for you and your family and place it in the wreath between the twigs. On New Year’s Day, read all the wishes given to you by your loved ones.

6. Add a little pizazz to any table top or dinning table by making your own winter scene. Grab a glass bowl (kind of like a fish bowl) and add faux snow, spruce or fir spins, and props (little birds, nests, small ornaments, etc) and have a little winter on your tables.

7. Once those holiday cards start pouring in, you’re going to need to find a place to put them, so why not make an awesome card display! Use an old window pane, shutter, wooden latter, or empty picture frames and showcase them! Not only will you have a unique holiday decorative piece, but you will have bragging rights that go with it!

8. If you like to stick with a more traditional holiday look throughout your home – then plaid is your lad! Mix and match plaids of varying sizes and scales for a layered, old school look. You can use plaid ribbon to wrap around your tree, a plaid tree skirt, plaid ribbons mixed with your greenery / garland, and even wrap your gifts with plaid wrapping paper and / or ribbon.

9. Don’t forget about your mailbox! Drape your mailbox with greenery, garland, ribbons, or bows. You can even add plastic ornaments or berries to your greenery to give it a festive look.

10. If you are looking for something other than holiday lights to place outside, try putting our lanterns. Arrange a grouping of festive lanterns at your entryway for a quick-and-easy holiday style. You can use flameless candles as a worry-free alternative.

11. You can take your gift wrapping to the next level by adorning your gifts with little bells, ornaments, or berries.You can use the same color ribbon on all your packages to make a cohesive look with different patented wrapping paper.

12. Make your own snow globes. Use mason jars and pick out some small trees, pine cones, and ornaments from your local craft store. Buy some faux snow and glue your trees to the inside base of the mason jar lid. Add the snow, pine cones, and ornaments to the inside of the jar itself and screw on the lid. Your little DIY snow globes will be so sweet and cozy.
