Out of School, What to Do?!

Summertime and living is easy… unless you’re a busy parent trying to come up with innovative ways to entertain your kids. Luckily, there are plenty of free and inexpensive ways to keep kids learning, engaged, and entertained right here in Middle Tennessee. Looking for some inspiration? Check out these fun things to do with your kids this summer that won’t break the bank.  

Visit the library 

Help your kids discover a world of wonder at one of the Sumner or Rutherford County libraries! Our local libraries have much more to offer than the books they are known for. Many libraries have youth programs that run throughout the year, including summer programs with crafts, bingo, and other creative activities.  

Check out the science museum 

The Adventure Science Center is a great way to pass the hot summer days with cool activities. In addition to the excellent kid-friendly exhibits that cover the museum floor, there are several summer camps and day camps to occupy children ages 5 and older. Week-long camps start at the end of May and run until the beginning of August, with themes such as “Wizarding World of Science,” “Forensic Finds,” and “Superpowered Science.”  

Explore nature 

Families in Middle Tennessee have a variety of parks and nature trails to explore. From kid-friendly hiking paths to special summer programs at the local Tennessee state parks, there are plenty of places to explore near Nashville, Gallatin, and Murfreesboro.  

Host a backyard Olympics 

Looking for ways to keep the kids active and entertained closer to home? Try hosting a backyard olympics! Invite friends and neighbors to your home or local park and set up a variety of yard games and activities to create your own mini Olympics. Use yard games you already have, such as bean bags or badminton, or try creating your own theme by using easy DIY minute games as inspiration.
