How to Clean Dryer Vent

June 9, 2023

Cleaning a dryer vent is often one of those tasks that is easily forgotten. Although it is recommended to clear out your dryer vent semi-annually, you’re dryer will could provide you the clues that it is time for clean. For example, if your dryer is not adequately drying your clothes after a full cycle, you notice a burning scent in your laundry room, or if the side of your dyer feels extremely warm to the touch during a cycle, these are all sure signs that it’s time to purge the vent. Although this task might feel overwhelming, there are some effective tips to keep in mind to simplify cleaning your dryer vent.

The first step will be to determine if your dryer is powered by gas or electricity. If your dryer relies on gas, turn off the gas supply valve. If it runs on electricity, simply unplugging it should suffice.

The next step will be to secure a dryer cleaning kit. These can be purchased brand new for usually under $25. Ensure you have a power drill and a vacuum as well.

Now that you have everything you need and your dryer is disconnected from the power source, find your vent. They are typically connected to a short exhaust pipe that connects to ductwork inside the wall. Once you’ve found the vent, peer inside to remove any screens or visible blockages.

Next, it’s time to use a hose attachment of your vacuum to eliminate lint in or around the duct. Connect the brush from your vent cleaning kit to your drill and then insert the brush into the duct. Allow it to go in as far as it will and maneuver it around and scrape the sides of the vent.

Finally, perform this until all particles of dust, debris, and lint are out of the vent. Remember to reconnect your dryer to power. Now you can enjoy the benefits of a cleaned dryer vent on your next laundry day.
